Cabin Bed vs Bunk Bed: Which Is Best for a Small UK Bedroom?

Children's bedrooms in UK homes are often the smallest rooms in the house, especially the box room. Choosing between a cabin bed and a bunk bed comes down to three questions: how many children are sleeping in the room, how old they are, and how much storage you need.

Quick answer

One child, small room: a cabin bed usually wins, because it adds storage without the height of a bunk. Two children sharing: a bunk bed saves the most floor space. UK safety guidance (BS EN 747) advises that the top bunk isn't suitable for children under six.

What's the difference?

A cabin bed is a single bed raised a little off the floor, with storage built in underneath: drawers, shelves, cupboards or a pull-out desk. A bunk bed stacks two sleeping spaces on top of each other, reached by a ladder or staircase, so two children can share the footprint of one bed.

Measure before you buy

  • Floor space: a UK 3ft single mattress is 90 × 190 cm, but the frame is larger. For example, the LUNEBY cabin bed measures 196 × 94 cm overall. Leave room to open drawers and walk past.
  • Ceiling height: for bunks and high sleepers, measure from the top mattress surface to the ceiling. Your child should be able to sit up comfortably without hitting their head.
  • Doors, windows and radiators: keep the ladder clear of the door swing and avoid placing a top bunk directly beside a window.
  • Mattress depth: check the maximum mattress depth in the product details. Too thick a mattress reduces the height of the guard rail.

Kids' beds to compare

All of these take a 3ft single (90 × 190 cm) mattress, sold separately unless stated. Each product page lists dimensions, materials and weight capacity, and how the bed is delivered for assembly.

Finishing the room

Once the bed is in, a fun ceiling light frees up surfaces for books and toys, and keeps the floor clear in a small room. Ceiling lights should be fitted by a qualified electrician.
