How to Style Artificial and Dried Flowers in Vases: A Simple Guide
par Kayluz Home sur Oct 14, 2026
Artificial and dried flowers are a brilliant choice for busy homes: no water, no wilting and no fresh-flower bill every week. The trick is styling them so they look relaxed and natural rather than stiff. It mostly comes down to choosing the right vase and getting the proportions right.
Choose a vase that suits the stems (narrow neck for a few stems, wide mouth for a full bunch), aim for flowers roughly one and a half to two times the height of the vase, group in odd numbers, and keep dried flowers away from steam and strong sunlight.
1. Match the vase to the arrangement
- Narrow-neck and bud vases hold one to three stems upright. Ideal for a single dried branch or a few faux tulips.
- Wide-mouth vases suit fuller bunches, but you may need to pack the base so stems don't flop.
- Sculptural vases look good with very little in them. Let the vase do the work.
2. Get the height right
A common florist's rule of thumb is for the arrangement to be about one and a half to two times the height of the vase. Too short looks squat; too tall looks top-heavy. Faux stems can usually be trimmed with wire cutters, so cut a little at a time and keep checking.
3. Use odd numbers and varied heights
Three, five or seven stems tend to look more natural than even numbers. Vary the heights slightly and angle a few stems outwards so the arrangement has movement.
4. Mix textures
Combining smooth faux blooms with feathery dried grasses, or glossy leaves with matte petals, makes artificial arrangements look far more convincing.
5. Place them where they'll last
Dried flowers are delicate. Keep them out of steamy bathrooms and away from strong direct sunlight, which can fade colours over time. Dust artificial flowers occasionally with a soft brush or a hairdryer on a cool setting.
Carry the floral theme through the room
Repeat a floral note in one or two other places, such as a cushion or a print, so the arrangement feels part of the room rather than an afterthought.
